Albany

Albany is a coastal port city on the southern coast of Western Australia, facing King George Sound. It serves as the commercial harbor and administrative center for the surrounding agricultural region. The local geography features sheltered anchorages separated from the Southern Ocean by a rugged granite peninsula.

Major Edmund Lockyer arrived aboard the brig Amity and established a British military outpost at the end of 1826, making the town the oldest continuous European settlement in Western Australia. First called Frederick Town after the Duke of York and Albany, the settlement took the name Albany in 1831 when administration transferred from New South Wales to the Swan River Colony. The harbor functioned as a key coaling station for mail steamships crossing the Indian Ocean before new harbor facilities opened at Fremantle in the 1890s. Albany gained municipal status in the 1870s and was proclaimed a city in the 1990s.

The Port of Albany handles the export of agricultural produce and regional minerals through specialized berths. Terminal facilities load bulk wheat, barley, and canola harvested across inland farming districts. Wharves also transfer woodchips from plantation timber, alongside silica sand for overseas glass manufacturing. Commercial fishing vessels operate from the inner harbor, catching pilchards and rock lobsters for Australian markets. Rural properties throughout the hinterland support sheep grazing for wool, beef cattle production, and vineyards producing cool-climate table wines.

On the heights overlooking the coast, the Princess Royal Fortress dates to the 1890s as a coastal artillery installation. Nearby, the National Anzac Centre recalls the Australian and New Zealand convoys that sailed from the sound in the First World War. Along the ocean shore, Torndirrup National Park contains wave-sculpted granite cliffs and sea arches facing the Southern Ocean. Further west along the bay, Albany's Historic Whaling Station preserves the industrial factory of the final commercial whaling operation in Australia, which closed in the late 1970s.
