Athens

Athens is the capital of Greece, set across the Attica plain near the Saronic Gulf. Limestone hills rise above the urban basin, while coastal inlets border the southern edge of the plain.

Human settlement on the Acropolis began during the Neolithic era as farming communities occupied the rocky plateau. Mycenaean rulers built a fortified palace during the Bronze Age, before civic reforms in the 6th century BC established the classical democratic state. Roman emperors added aqueducts and public monuments in the 2nd century, and Byzantine authorities converted ancient temples into churches. Following centuries of Ottoman administration, the city became the capital of the independent Greek kingdom in 1834. Neoclassical avenues, restored monuments, and new administrative centers shaped the modern street plan. The municipality is the political center of Greece and the seat of the Hellenic Parliament.

Maritime trade, banking, telecommunications, and software development form the backbone of local industry. Corporations such as OTE and the National Bank of Greece maintain corporate headquarters in the business district, while commercial lenders handle shipping finance across the Aegean basin. Pharmaceutical laboratories, food processors, and metal fabricators run production facilities along the northern transport routes. Container freight and international passenger ferries move through the deep docks of Piraeus, connecting continental rail corridors with island ports and regional shipping lanes.

A high limestone plateau supports the ancient citadel above the central streets. The Parthenon temple stands on the Acropolis, featuring marble columns that reach a height of 10.4 m (34 ft). Scholars gather at the National Archaeological Museum, which preserves classical bronze statues, gold funerary masks, and painted ceramics. The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens educates students in medicine, law, and philosophy across central research facilities. In 1896, the first modern Olympic Games took place at the Panathenaic Stadium, an arena constructed entirely of white Pentelic marble.
