Brisbane

Brisbane is the state capital of Queensland, positioned along the winding curves of the Brisbane River near Moreton Bay. The settlement took its name from Sir Thomas Brisbane, the colonial governor of New South Wales. Turrbal and Jagera clans called the river junction Meanjin before European arrival.

John Oxley navigated the river during the 1820s before a penal station relocated to the riverbank in 1824. Free settlers established private farms during the 1840s as pastoral runs spread across the surrounding country. Queensland separated from New South Wales in 1859, choosing the river settlement as the capital of the colony. Steamboat traffic expanded along the waterway during the late 19th century, prompting the construction of sandstone government offices, customs houses, and commercial wharves. The settlement incorporated as a municipality before federation united the Australian colonies.

Brisbane City Hall displays classical Corinthian columns and a clock tower built from Queensland freestone and marble. The Story Bridge carries six lanes of vehicular traffic across the river on a balanced cantilever steel superstructure completed during the 1930s. South Bank Parklands features public walking trails, picnic lawns, and an artificial sand lagoon along the southern riverbank. The Queensland Art Gallery shows Indigenous bark paintings, colonial watercolors, and Asian sculptures across its brutalist pavilion galleries.
