Castries

Castries is the capital city of Saint Lucia, situated on a sheltered harbor along the northwestern coast. France named the settlement in honor of Charles Eugène Gabriel de La Croix, marquis de Castries. The poet Derek Walcott, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, was born in the city.

Jacques Dyel du Parquet established the first French settlement on the harbor peninsula in 1650. The town changed hands between Britain and France numerous times across the 18th century as both powers contested the naval anchorage. Britain secured permanent control in the early 19th century, developing the deep harbor into a coaling station for steamships. A fire destroyed the downtown district in 1948, after which the city rebuilt its administrative center with concrete structures. Saint Lucia achieved full independence in the 1970s, establishing the capital as its sovereign political seat.

Port Castries unloads containerized freight, bulk grains, and international cruise ships along its deepwater quays. Du Boulay's Bottling Company manufactures carbonated beverages and purified mineral water. St. Lucia Distillers produces Chairman's Reserve dark rum and spiced cane spirits. Winfresh coordinates maritime export shipments of fresh bananas and tropical tree fruits. Renwick & Company distributes pharmaceutical supplies and agricultural hardware. The Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court hears regional appellate proceedings in the downtown judicial complex.

The Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception features interior murals painted by Saint Lucian artist Dunstan St. Omer and exposed timber ceiling beams. Derek Walcott Square honors the local Nobel laureate beside a saman tree several centuries old. Castries Central Market houses vendor stalls selling straw baskets, nutmeg, and cinnamon bark beneath an iron roof constructed in the 1890s. Morne Fortune overlooks the harbor with brick barracks and stone powder magazines from the colonial era. Government House displays Victorian gingerbread fretwork on the crest of the ridge.
