Chandler

Chandler is a desert city in the East Valley region of south-central Arizona, located southeast of Phoenix. The city takes its name from Alexander John Chandler, the first veterinary surgeon of the Arizona Territory. Each March, the Chandler Ostrich Festival celebrates early agricultural experiments with ostrich ranching through carnival rides and community parades.

Alexander John Chandler purchased desert acreage during the 1890s and subdivided the original townsite in 1912. An intricate network of irrigation canals diverted water from the Salt River to cultivate alfalfa, citrus groves, and long-staple cotton fields. The settlement incorporated as a town in 1920. Housing subdivisions and shopping plazas replaced agricultural farmland during the late 20th century. Municipal administrative departments and the city council assemble inside Chandler City Hall beside the downtown colonnade park. A central town plaza anchored the initial street grid with shaded walkways and commercial storefronts.

Industrial business parks south of the freeway house silicon fabrication plants and aerospace engineering facilities. Intel manufactures computer microprocessors and silicon wafers at the Ocotillo manufacturing complex. Microchip Technology, headquartered in the city, designs microcontrollers, mixed-signal devices, and flash memory circuits for automotive computers. Northrop Grumman fabricates space launch rockets and ballistic missile target boosters at its aerospace facility. NXP Semiconductors produces gallium-nitride radio-frequency power transistors for cellular communications towers. Testing laboratories inspect cleanroom silicon wafers before shipping cargo containers to electronics assemblers.

The San Marcos Hotel is a Mission Revival resort constructed in the 1910s, featuring red-tile roofs, stucco colonnades, and grass courtyard lawns. The resort property introduced the first grass golf course to the state and accommodated travelers visiting the desert valley. The Chandler Museum displays historic photographs, agricultural harvesting tools, and rotating regional art installations. The Arizona Railway Museum preserves vintage steam engines, wooden cabooses, and stainless-steel passenger coaches across outdoor rail tracks. The museum collection includes a Southern Pacific steam locomotive parked on display alongside a restored crane tender.
