Chișinău

Chișinău is the capital city of Moldova, located along the Bîc River in the central part of the country. The name comes from an archaic Romanian term for a spring or water fountain. Local traditions connect the early settlement to trade routes linking eastern European valleys with the Black Sea.

Monastery charters first recorded the settlement in 1436 as a village granted to Moldavian nobles by Prince Iliaș and Prince Ștefan. The Principality of Moldavia fell under Ottoman suzerainty in the 16th century, leading to periodic levies and rebuilding. The Russian Empire annexed the province in 1812, choosing the town as its regional administrative capital and establishing wide boulevards. Romanian governance lasted between the two World Wars until the Soviet Union incorporated the region in the 1940s. The national parliament and government ministries established their seats along the central avenues after independence in the 1990s.

Bucuria, founded in the city in the 1950s, produces boxed chocolates, fruit jellies, and chocolate pralines for markets across eastern Europe. Franzeluța operates commercial bakeries producing hearth-baked rye loaves, braided sweet rolls, and dried wheat pastas. Viorica Cosmetic manufactures plant-based skin creams, botanical shampoos, and floral perfumes using herbal extracts grown on regional farms. Topaz manufactures precision electronic measuring instruments, automated control assemblies, and specialized machine components for processing facilities.

The Nativity Cathedral is a neoclassical stone church built in the 1830s with a zinc-coated dome and six-column portico. The Triumphal Arch stands beside the cathedral square, erected in the 1840s to house a bronze bell cast from captured cannons. Stephen the Great Central Park features shaded pedestrian alleys around a bronze statue of Moldavia's medieval prince. The National Museum of History of Moldova houses ancient silver coins, weapons, and medieval pottery inside a restored 19th-century hall.
