Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi curves along Corpus Christi Bay on the Gulf Coast of southern Texas, situated south of San Antonio. The name originated in the 16th century when Spanish explorer Alonso Álvarez de Pineda sighted the bay on the Catholic feast day of Corpus Christi. Steady sea breezes established the coastal area as a premier windsurfing destination along the western Gulf of Mexico.

Henry Lawrence Kinney founded the settlement in 1839 as a trading post to sell goods to Mexican merchants and regional ranchers. General Zachary Taylor staged an encampment of American troops at the site in 1845 before marching south toward the Rio Grande. The town gained official incorporation in the 1850s as maritime commerce expanded through the coastal barrier islands. The deepwater Port of Corpus Christi opened in the 1920s, connecting regional agricultural shippers with ocean freighters. Naval Air Station Corpus Christi began pilot flight training during the 1940s, establishing aviation operations across the bay.

The Port of Corpus Christi moves breakbulk cargo, agricultural grains, and industrial raw materials through its deepwater ship channel. Whataburger began in the city during the 1950s, creating a restaurant chain known for custom-made five-inch burgers served on toasted buns. Voestalpine Texas, across the bay near Portland, manufactures hot briquetted iron, producing high-purity direct-reduced iron briquettes for electric arc furnace steelmakers worldwide. Susser Holdings created the Laredo Taco Company dining brand in Corpus Christi, producing fresh handmade flour tortillas and regional breakfast tacos for retail locations across the Southwest.

The USS Lexington contains a naval aviation museum on North Beach, preserving vintage military propeller airplanes and jet fighters across its flight deck. The Texas State Aquarium showcases Gulf of Mexico marine life, presenting rescued sea turtles and living coral reef habitats. The Selena Museum displays stage costumes and gold music records commemorating the recordings and artistic career of Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla. The South Texas Botanical Gardens and Nature Center preserves native flora, exotic orchid conservatories, and shaded birding trails along Oso Creek.
