Glasgow

Glasgow is a city in west central Scotland, on the River Clyde a short way up from the Firth of Clyde. Saint Mungo founded a church on the site in the 6th century, and the city still uses his symbols of a bird, a tree, a bell and a fish on its coat of arms.

Glasgow Cathedral, built in the 12th and 13th centuries over the tomb of Saint Mungo, is the only medieval cathedral on the Scottish mainland that came through the Reformation with its roof intact. The University of Glasgow was founded in 1451, and Adam Smith taught moral philosophy there in the 18th century. James Watt, working as an instrument maker for the university, thought of the separate condenser for the steam engine while walking on the green by the river in 1765. In the 19th century the yards on the Clyde built ocean liners and cargo ships for owners around the world, and the city called itself the Second City of the Empire.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the architect and designer, built the city's art school and a set of tea rooms for Kate Cranston in his own style of tall chairs and stylized roses. Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum holds Christ of Saint John of the Cross by Salvador Dalí, bought by the city in the 1950s. Celtic and Rangers, the two main football clubs, have played each other since the late 19th century in a rivalry known as the Old Firm.

The Weir Group, based in Glasgow, makes pumps for mining companies. Tennent's Lager is brewed at a brewery in the East End of the city. AAC Clyde Space builds small satellites in the city.
