Rome
Rome is the capital of Italy, on the Tiber River in the region of Lazio. Vatican City, an independent state ruled by the pope, lies inside it on the west bank of the river. The city marks its birthday every 21 April, the traditional founding date given by Roman writers.
Legend says Romulus founded the city on the Palatine Hill, and archaeology shows villages on its hills from the early first millennium BC. Rome grew from a kingdom into a republic and then into the capital of an empire around the Mediterranean, with Augustus as its first emperor. The popes ruled the city for most of the Middle Ages and, from the 15th century, filled it with Renaissance and Baroque churches, squares and fountains. Rome became the capital of united Italy in 1871. It held the Summer Olympic Games in 1960.
Bulgari, the jeweler known for its gold and gemstone necklaces and watches, began as the silversmith shop of Sotirios Voulgaris in the city. Cinecittà, the film studios on the southeastern edge of the city, made Ben-Hur and the films of Federico Fellini. Enel, the power company, also has its headquarters in Rome.
The Colosseum, an amphitheater of travertine opened by the emperor Titus in the 1st century, could seat tens of thousands for games. The Pantheon, rebuilt under Hadrian in the 2nd century, still has its unreinforced concrete dome with an open oculus at its top. St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, with a dome designed by Michelangelo, stands over the traditional tomb of the apostle Peter. The Trevi Fountain, finished in the 18th century, shows the sea god Oceanus on a chariot drawn by sea horses.
