Sacramento

Sacramento is the capital of California, situated at the confluence of the Sacramento and American rivers.

John Sutter established a presence in 1839 when he constructed an agricultural trading post known as Sutter's Fort. The discovery of gold along the nearby American River during the late 1840s transformed the waterfront landing into a busy supply depot for prospectors. John Sutter Jr. platted the street grid along the riverfront to accommodate incoming riverboats and merchant warehouses.
