The industrial city of Timișoara lies along the Bega Canal in western Romania. A royal fortress stood on the river marshlands before King Charles I of Hungary established his court in the settlement in 1315. The Ottoman Empire conquered the fortress in the 16th century, holding the province under military administration for over a century. Habsburg forces expelled the Ottoman garrison in the early 18th century, initiating the canalization of the Bega and rebuilding the town fortifications. Timișoara introduced electric street lighting in the 1880s as the first European city with an integrated electric illumination grid. In 1989, mass demonstrations against communist rule began at the Reformed Church and swept across the entire nation, leading to the collapse of the authoritarian regime.
